More visitors are being recorded than I believe enter my location. How can I ensure BT Wi-Fi Insight is not classifying outside devices as visitors?

Please contact your Business Manager or Sales Manager and explain the details of what you expect to see at your location(s). Additional information about the environment around the location is sometimes necessary to assess possible resolutions (i.e. my location sits on a busy pedestrian street, or my location is adjacent to a crowded restaurant). Also, any data points available to support your expectations is very valuable (i.e. traffic counter data, transaction data, etc.). With the additional information, BT Wi-Fi Insight may be able to adjust the calibration for improved relevance.

Why is the visitor count lower than expected?

As BT Wi-Fi Insight detects the presence of smartphones and other Wi-Fi enabled devices, we are only able to detect the number of people carrying a device. BT Wi-Fi Insight detects a consistent, large sample of the population in and around your location, which allows you to meaningfully monitor trends to help improve your business.

I activated BT Wi-FI Insight in an environment with a known number of devices (i.e. office or test). Why is the dashboard showing different numbers?

BT Wi-Fi Insight's analytics technology is designed around customer behavior patterns in our target verticals and will not provide a 1-to-1 device count in a test or office environment. Common test environment discrepancies include:

  • The total number of devices is higher than expected: the AP is highly sensitive and picks up outside devices
  • The number of visitors is lower than expected: BT Wi-Fi Insight classifies devices seen for long periods of time as staff members and excludes them from the visitor count
  • Duration is blank: all devices detected by BT Wi-Fi Insight were classified as staff, not visitors, and were excluded from the average duration calculation
